what should I do if...

This was my question during the last week. Why? because for this period my friend and I  were assigned to an Advanced group, and that for sure was a great concern not only for how the group could be, but also for the structure to be explained...

During our class observation we tend to create an image of the Ss, and most of the time we make a mistake judging them in advanced. As I have shared with you every single group is different, but there is a common characteristic among them which is ALL OF THEM LIE, and is the same that we did when we were in that level. but what do I mean when I say "they lie"? every single student is paying attention during the grammar explanation, and all of them nod when the teacher asks "Did you understand"...then the silence period...then the general nod, but it is only until you give them a practice when you realize if they got the idea or not.

This was the experience with this famous group, the topic explained by the teacher was kind of difficult and confusing and all of them were paying attention when that happened. It is a shame that (as students) we don´t want to ask for our questions, doubts or it is really embarrassing when we make a mistake in front of the others.

Even though the topic was tough and I was really worried, everything went well. To break the ice with them I include a CHINESE WHISPER warm up, I asked them to form two lines and to spread the sentence that I gave to the last student from every line. The sentences were long and kind of confusing, but the most important part is that they had fun and cooperate with the activity.

After that, I presented a brief review about the participle clauses, because the teacher explained the grammar part in the previous class. Here is when I say that all of them were in agreement by nodding that they understood everything. But things changed when I gave them the first written practice and I set the time to solve it in 10 minutes. As in every single group, there are some Ss that get the idea in a couple of minutes, some others are fighting against the structure, and the ones that are looking at the ceiling of the room, praying for the class to finish...for them is that we as teachers must pay attention to and encourage them to go beyond by their own
and by giving them extra practices.

Finally, I presented a video and they had to solve an activity related with the main structure, but in the same way only a couple of them did it in the required time. What I have found really useful in those cases, is the fact of make them work in group without noticing I mean they have to come to the front and solve the sentences by their own, if they can´t do it...the rest has to help in a polite way...and at the end I know that most of them will take notes, and will respond to their personal doubts.

  1. Hi Sarix!!!
well I was there with you, and what I could observe and percieve was that it was a really hard structure for various students, considering that the explanation the teacher had given days before was not so convincent (to my point of view) so, the fact of doing a review was a key point for the students.
We sometimes have to take into consideration the pace in which students work, and we may not cover everything in 50 minutes as we wish. We learn from each experience and this advanced group is a completely new level for us, but as the days passed we'll improve sarita.
    Nice work!!!

  2. Hellooooooooooo cicada team!!!
Let me introduce my commetn by saying that I worked with this group in my first experience and they were really nice.
I like both of the quotes you used in here. The first one reminds me of "Dr. House." He always says: everybody lies....and you and he are right about it :D but it is nice that you went forthward and detected this!

I know that some times you have to push the students to get in the right path, specially in topics like this, but I see that you did it great and you have enhanced your teaching skills. I picked some nuggets from your experience!

Keep on doing great and enjoy teaching!

  3. Hello Dear Sarah! Let me tell you that I enjoyed reading your blog because as you said, we were liked that in that level. However, now as practitioners, we can realize how they lie because they are afraid to make mistakes in front if their classmates.

I know that it is really difficult to work with students in Advanced levels. Nevertheless, I know that you are capable to do it in the best way.

It was a difficult topic, and I liked that you provide many written practices because in that case is the best way to review the grammar part.

CONGRATULATION DEAR SARAH! IT WAS A NICE CLASS!

  5. Hello... aawwrrr haha. Hey, I like the first activity. It is quite challenging and funny. I think that the grammar part is challgenging too as we are starting to cope with that as teachers and not as students. As you said Sarita there are always students who have no problem getting the content, but al also "the ones that are looking at the ceiling of the room, praying for the class to finish" can no be neglected; there is when you have to look for easier ways or examples so that they get what you want. I think you did your best I always Sarita. Step by step is how we improve. Nice done ;)

  6. Hello my osicada (you know, a combination hahaha)! Well, you developed very well, but grammar is always hard to teach. Even though it was not a favorable situation, I see you did well. These students are more demmanding in their learning, which makes you think beyond about what to do on your class and how to develop yourself in order to teach in the right way. I know you will do better and better while time passes as you have since we started. Cheers my dear, and keep always with the hard work :).

  7. Hello Sarita!! You developed your class very well, and what you said is true! We have to look for different ways for the students to pay attention, remember that our classes have to be meaningful for them. Keep working hard Jarita!! :)

  8. Hi Sarita!
I just want to let you know I agree with your idea of the lair Ss. At least now you know your Ss better, you know that you shouldn't take their nodding as 100% truth.
I believe I can answer your question: what should I do if something like this happens again?
Well, I guess you should do your best as you did this time and use your previous experiences in order to make sure your Ss understand.
